Two weeks to be very proud to be British

The past two weeks have been amazing and it’s been an experience like no other.

I didn’t get to any of the games but I passed through the Olympic village everyday. Even though the perception was of chaos and overcrowding this didn’t come to pass

London coped fantastically well with this global event and we pulled it off in style.

All the tabloid news, the back biting, the doubts, the prejudiced reports from the Daily Mail and the laughable comments from Mit Romney could not dampen these games

Even the weather behaved which was remarkable given how wet the UK had been just prior to the Olympic fortnight.

We have proven when this island nation is organised we get it right and we show the world how it’s done.

From the army of volunteers who became games makers, the athletes who collected a record breaking medal haul and indeed the army, they all played their part to make London 2012 a games we can all be proud of.

Working in London and living in a commuting bubble I was wondering how the games had been adopted in the depths of the country but being home this weekend proves the whole country was behind the games. Then again it probably helped that local boy Tom Daley made it to the diving finals.

It seems the whole world got behind these games except America who had to suffer with poor coverage and shambolic scheduling which made the American people feel disconnected from London 2012. I feel sorry for ex pat friends living in the USA as they will never get the measure of the glory we have experienced here in the UK.

Children have got enthused about sport. Families have visited the games in the thousands. The elderly have reminisced. And us gays have enjoyed every Lycra clad moment 🙂

The closing ceremony was the party that London 2012 deserved and we should all be celebrating our Olympic hang overs.

I hope we can ride this wave of up beat positivity. I would love to see this optimism and pride continue through the Paralympics and I would be so happy to see those athletes receive the same dedication, backing, enthusiasm and love from the British people and the global audience (but not America as NBC aren’t broadcasting any of it).

London 2012. We are a very proud nation*

*apologies for letting George Michael peddle some crap new song at the party, we don’t know how that happened!

  1. A wonderful fortnight for sure!

I was baffled at George Michael getting two tracks and then I realised that stations worldwide need to take ad breaks. True! Kate Bush and Muse was also passed over internationally.
