It’s hard work cracking 28 minutes

No it honestly is hard work trying to crack a continuous run of 28 minutes – find out why in latest video update.

Please excuse my mumbling in the video but I have a sore throat so was unable to talk at a normal register. I have ramped up the volume so I hope you can understand me.

The one thing I always forget when I am running is that when I finish I feel great!. This is something I need to take with me next time I hit the road.

I did struggle tonight and the one thing I forgot to mention in the video was that this was my first ever run with no music whatsoever. I didn't run naked as I still had the Get Running Coach teaching me and the Nike+Running app informing me of my progress but it felt odd. I don't know if this had an impact on my performance tonight.

I think when I run with music I internalize the comments etc but as this was not the case I was talking to myself and in doing so allowed myself to convince me to stop and to walk when I needed. But then again this isn't such a bad thing.

I had quite a few cheers tonight (one set came through twice) and as I wasn't listening to music they came through loud and clear. Many many thanks to Enda, Mark and Vicky for the cheers from Facebook and Path – very much appreciated.

I kicked myself for this run but the charts are good – the heat map shows more yellow and green and it's consistent even though in places I know I walked a bit. I am certainly not going to beat myself up over this. I still managed 5 km – 8 weeks ago I struggled to run for a train!

I'll have some company on my MoRunning 10k as Enda, his friend Jonathan and my friend Janice will be joining us as we run around Greenwich Park. I now need to convince Paul and Antonio to join us 🙂

My Alzheimer's Society sponsorship fund is at £390.00 – many many thanks to all who have contributed so far. Please pop by my Just Giving page and make a donation. Anything you can give will help incentives me and will go towards all the excellent work the charity provides for sufferers of Dementia and Alzheimer's and of course the support they provide to their families and loved ones.

Update: I'm taking back everything I said about feeling great as I had a terrible night. My throat has swollen up and I'm having problems breathing/swallowing. No more running for me for a couple of days!

  1. The first time I ran without music was the 10K at Greenwich! I was told that they discourage headphones (health & safety blah blah – which I was foolish enough to believe). It was Ok, but a bit odd, as you say.

For someone who just started this so recently I’m surprised that you are ‘kicking’ yourself for the run. In my admittedly limited experience, I’m occasionally baffled as to why I go significantly faster/slower sometimes. I can’t determine any overriding patterns.

So, at this stage I’m looking at the long game. What are my stats like over a year for example?

  2. Great run, I wouldn’t worry about the pace though, just make sure you get the miles in your legs. You might want to consider doing some of your runs without your technology, just wear a watch and map it later.

  3. Hi Keith,

    Great post!

My name is Thibaut, I’m doing some research at Warwick University for my postgraduate study. My area of interest is the relationship between technology and behaviour.

I’m a runner myself and find the concept of nike+ fuelband simply amazing! I’m very interested in researching the impact of the use of nike+ fuelband on the way people practice running.

It would be fantastic if you would have a moment to chat with me to discuss your experience of running with nike+ fuelband.

Let me know if you are interested!

    Best Regards

    Thibaut
