A week without football

As most of my friends will know I am no fan of football and have successfully managed to escape any World Cup match to date. Of course I have had to hear about it in the office but for the most part I have avoided it as much as possible. To be honest there appears to be more talk about the plastic trumpets the spectators are blowing rather than the sport – which just about sums it up.

It’s been a hard, long week at work and I have to admit I have contemplate killing a few of my colleagues but knowing my luck the buggers would only come back to haunt me in my sleep!

Friday started with a sore throat and an aching back. My physio sorted the latter but my throat ensured I remained as quiet as possible throughout the day. This for some reason offends my colleagues who cannot seem to grasp when I am being quiet, I don’t want to talk!

During lunch I attended a performance of Cymbeline at the Bridewell Theatre will a couple of colleagues. It’s not a Shakespeare play I know anything about and to be honest the story (even for the Bard) was a little bit out there. It was ok, it got me away from my desk for an hour but to be honest it was not the best performance I have seen at the Bridewell. I commend the actors for taking on all the roles and remembering the original text but it can be a real stretch fitting an entire play into 45 minutes. I think this is what let Cymbeline down as the actors seemed to be projecting at the speed of light.

Dillon and I at the Benugo Bar, London
After work I made my way to the Benugo Bar which is in the BFI on the South Bank and met up with Dillon and some new friends. I really do think it testiment to the internet when I can quite happily go out for an evening with people who the majority of I have never physically met before yet know them enough to trust them and feel safe.

In other words this was really my first tweet-up and between Dillon and I we each knew one another from conversations online and it seemed we all shared common interests.

As Dillon was visiting London again it seemed the perfect opportunity to meet up together, especially as we all live and work so close to one another.

Everyone was in really good spirits and it really felt like no ice needed to be broken at all. I am sure this is a measure of how much we give away online these days!

So who was there? There’s Nick (@bainser) – he works in tailoring. Ste (@originalsteve) who works for a production company. Pete (@peacockpete) whose a musician and Darren (@DazSco) who works in the legal profession. Of course me (@trunkguy) and Dillon (@dillonbuck) but you know what we do for a living!

A mix of people whom I am not sure may of met without the power of the web and yet we all seemed to click quite quickly. We had a very fun evening and the contemporary surroundings of the Benugo Bar and I am hopeful we will all meet up again.

(I included the tweet names of everyone in case you feel compelled to follow any of us!)

So it’s Saturday, it’s around 6 am and I am wide awake. It’s quite sunny and I can only hope it stays that way. Later today Richard (@richinstalb) and I are driving up to Upton House in Northamptonshire where we are attending a Jazz Picnic with friends. I’m not sure what to expect but it’ll be a great opportunity to get out of the house, have a relaxing time and meet our friends little girl (whom we are yet to meet!).

Tomorrow we are also hoping for nice weather as we’re heading over to Cliveden House with some other friends who are National Trust Newbies. I sincerely hope it’s a nice day as it’s lovely to walk along the Thames when it’s warm and the sun is shining.

So a busy weekend but hopefully a nice one too. I must go and charge my PEN in order to capture all the festivities 😉

Whatever you are up to this weekend – have a good one (and take my advice, avoid the World Cup!)

Thanks for your comment!
